Duration

This is normally the third question that I am asked the most.

How long should my workout be? To answer that I will have to talk about it in three different groups: cardio, weights, and abs.

The duration of your cardio will depend upon many factors: like if you are trying to lose weight, or if you want to increase your cardiovascular health. If you are trying to lose weight then you want to make sure that you are doing at least 20-30 minutes of exercising 3-5 days a week. In another page I talked about seeing people at the gym killing it on treadmills, bikes, and other types of cardio equipment.

So many studies show, and from my own personal knowledge, that it is best to stay in the appropriate training cycle. If you want to lose weight you must work your aerobic system. The fuel source for this system is carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. The intensity is typically low to moderate and the duration is unlimited. So ask yourself while working out, can I continue to do this or am I about to exert myself?

Now if you are trying to increase your cardiovascular health then very light exercising will do just fine. You can begin with walking around your block or just doing a light jog every other day. This is enough to increase your health, but if you want to be really healthy then you should exercise 3-5 times a week for 20-30 minutes each time.
